THE ROOM

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features save for the one wall covered with small index-card files.

They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either directions, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read “Girls I Have Liked”. I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realise that I recognised the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn’t match.

A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their contents. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching. A file named “Friends” was next to one marked “Friends I Have Betrayed”.

The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird: “Books I Have Read”, “Lies I Have Told”, “Comfort I Have Given”, “Jokes I Have Laughed At”. Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: “Things I’ve Yelled at My Brothers”. Others I couldn’t laugh at: “Things I Have Done In Anger”, “Things I Have Muttered under My Breath at My Parents”. I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes there were fewer than I hoped.

I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my twenty years to write each of these thousands, possibly millions, of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked “Songs I Have Listened To”, I realised the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn’t found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quantity* of music, but more by the vast amount of time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked “Lustful Thoughts”, I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed contents. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded.

Suddenly I felt an almost animal rage. One thought dominated my mind: “No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!” In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn’t matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took the file at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it. The title bore “People I Have Shared the Gospel With”. The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that the hurt started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key.

But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please, not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus.

I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn’t bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one?

Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn’t anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands, and began to cry again. He walked over and out His arms around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn’t say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.

“No!” I shouted, rushing to Him. All I could find to say was “No, no”, as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn’t be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood.

He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and continued to sign the cards. I don’t think I’ll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hands on my shoulder and said, “It is finished.”

I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

Business Etiquette & Service Excellence.

With not an inkling of idea what it was about from seniors, other than that you have to wear business formal for every tutorial, it turns out to be quite an interesting subject. Topics such as creating a professional presence, how to go about delighting your customers and also the art of corporate entertainment, which was better emphasized through a dining task assigned to us; I feel that these are really useful for business school students to understand the basic requirements, especially when we are in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Through this, I realized I became more conscious of my every little action. The way I speak, the way I stand, the way I dress, and the way I eat even, it’s suddenly all on display with a spotlight on me showing how I portray myself to the world. Perhaps while we are still in campus there might be little difference, but when we go out there or during the Student Internship Program (SIP), it is the smallest details that tells the employer about you, your character, your behavior, your attitude. First impression really counts. You don’t get a second chance or a dining task to let your employer get to know you better. Ever watched “Style by Jury”? The critical comments the jury make when they are behind closed doors, not a very pleasant experience to hear them straight in the face.

Being conscious is not enough. Just like how my secondary friends and I like to joke about the abbreviation for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to stand for “No Action, Talk Only”. By being alert and aware about all these things at all times, I‘ve received comments such as I’m careful and sensitive, diligent, with an air of elegance, of which I have never heard before and I know I do not have these qualities to began with. So, in my opinion, I’ve really gained a lot of knowledge with regard to creating a professional presence.

In the service industry, delighting customers is like of the number one importance. Through the lectures and workshops on this topic, I have learnt things such as creating trust between customers and service provider, fulfilling their needs, and to go about doing all these with style and professionalism. We have all been customers ourselves; we know how demanding we are when being served by others. Seldom do we think of the other party, the service provider, how challenging it is to satisfy us and to delight us at the same time, for them to do their job and to make us happy. Thus by thinking from the customers’ point of views, we understand their needs better, we know as a customer how we want things to be done, so all we have to do, as service providers now, is to do it accordingly.

It is also noted that after I’ve learnt more about the service industry, I feel for the service providers more. I understand the difficulty and level of self-discipline you need to have, that level of commitment to do a job well. Hence I would always be more lenient and thank them as much as possible such that even my grandmother thinks I’m being too polite. Her view is that it is their job to serve us, we are meant to be served, so just sit back relax and enjoy the service. First thought: A typical Singaporean and that is why there are so many foreign talents in the service industry as compared to fellow countrymen. At this point I would like to quote from Ritz Carlton, “We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen”, rephrase: we are not your maids, we do not listen to your beck and call but we are here to provide a service, something more to add value to your experience with us.

Last but not least, the art of corporate entertainment. Table manners, etiquette, and social etiquette, these may seem like common sense and what we were supposed to be taught from young. But after going through the lecture and workshop then observing Singaporeans, this is definitely not the case here. You get to see people eating the same way as they do in a coffee shop when they are in a high-end restaurant. While taking bus and train, people are squeezing in trying to get a seat for themselves first, regardless of elderly or pregnant ladies present. When hailing for a taxi, people stand further in front, so as to get it first. Really, there is no reason for us to get angry when others call Singaporeans ugly.

It is true that by learning all these things now, we can start making a difference with the younger generation. However, it is impractical when you are still among the midst of the older generation. They just continue to shove you out of their way and by being gracious, just as how we were taught to be, we give way. The thing is, by giving a thought to others, we’re termed as “stupid”, which is what my grandmother always say to me when I refuse to stand right in front of the bus or train doors with her, but rather stand in the back and be the last to board. Also, it is really inconvenient for us to practice these etiquettes when other people do not follow the protocol as you do, especially when the bus is full and you are running late. Thus for me, it depends on the situation that I am in. When going out, I allocate a few extra minutes to my travelling time so that if I happened to miss any bus due to such reasons, at least I will still be on time. This is more suitable for me as I do not have to fight with others to board the bus first, I am also less panicky with the extra time thus more composed, and also still be punctual for classes, outings or any other events.

For business etiquette and service excellence, all these topics actually do have something in common. That is to be alert, pay attention to details and be observant. Through these, we are aware of our own presence, how we portray ourselves to others; notified of the needs of customers and what they expect by paying attention to their behavior; observing our surroundings and situations and apply concepts learnt on general etiquette accordingly. By practicing enough, you actually get to cultivate a good habit and helped to shape your own character and personality, which ultimately gives you a good impression with people like your employers. They can see and perceive you to be a good employee hence increasing your chance of getting the job or a promotion.

i havent been blogging recently,
and partly's because i'm lazy.
but there's just so many things going on,

the messed up life,

neither here nor there. hahah.
it was fun, to be back with all the cadets,
squadmates, cis, ho, tos.
really miss the times together.
and wanie kind of psycho me to join ci/ho course.

but. though the nco squad had quite a large number of people (which is good),
their planning was... horrible i should say.
1. no proper proposal.
2. they even admitted the games for the camp, was a direct copy and paste from my proposal all those years back when my batch planned for np camp.
3. there wasn't even a proper timeline for the activities.
4. they didn't allocate the cadets to their respective groups before hand. they wanted to wait and see who actually came then allocate.
5. sec3s were totally not included in their planning. sure, the cis said they would plan for them. but that's like only for certain activities, like campfire prep, and mostly for day two.
6. they prepared food for the cadets. but not their own.

HAPPY 2010!

heh. went to kallang leisure park to celebrate with cya.
went pastamania to eat first.
then najib pangseh! he went to join his friends at siloso for the countdown. :(
stayed there for quite some time,
then cause nothing better to do (it was only 10pm+)
we played hide-and-seek/catching around the shopping mall. lol.
got caught by calvin(ex-cya) and woon jiun, ran off, and end up got caught again by kendrick and bertrand.
saw the top of the fireworks from marina at the entrance of the leisure park.
the cars parked there were all honking and driving in circles.

alot of people went off,
so left only woon jiun, calvin(ex-cya), jia en, ke en, darren, jingting, shinn, trish, nicholas and me.
went to the stadium, sit down and chatted,
but halfway through shinn and trish had to leave.
apparently there was someone at the stadium fighting so we all left also to find somewhere else to spend the night: woon jiun's house.
(oh. and it's just right opposite anderson! just above the coffee shop :)
by the time we reached it was already like 3am?
somehow, they started taking out all the xo, dunno what absolute peach and vanilla thingy.
and we all went to shop'n'save to buy green tea and pepsi to mix into the alcohol.
(woon jiun's brother's jiu3 liang4 is suuuuper good. and he's like my age??)
the ns guys challanged each other to drink like quite a large amount of neat xo and then do pumpings, see who can tahan longest. (and ke en went: diao... the male ego...)
and we played games like werewolf (similar to murderer) and they took out the wine (after they finished the xo). it was like 5am+ at that time already?

fell asleep at 6am+ and woke up near 7?
the rest didn't get much sleep as well and jingting actually still can study accounting.
first to went home, with ke en and darren.
fell asleep on the train back to cck and i was like leaning against this malay guy the whole way please (i think). when i woke up he smile at me and say happy new year some more.
suuuper paiseh please. and he looks abit like asraf.
reached home, bathed, lie on the sofa then black out liao.
wake up at 1pm+, went malaysia, and back.

i still couldn't get over the amazing-ness of it all.
was attending the miracle service yesterday,
and pastor pacer was talking about the fall of man and the grace of the Lord.
he asked this particular question that impacted me so greatly
and all i could remember of the service was this:
How did God feel when man sin?
all along we've been (or rather i've been) doing:
ah crap. i've sinned and now i have to confess and pray that He will forgive me thanks to the blood of Jesus, or oops i did something wrong and i need to repent etc.
it was all about me, us, never about Him.
it felt like you didn't do your homework and the teacher gave you that face and maybe scold for a little bit then let you go that kind of thing.
hell no. and i got my prayer answered today.

after the 9am service,
i just had this urge to attend speedlight for like after a super long time of not attending.
and pastor pacer talked about the book of Hosea.
it goes something like God ordered Hosea to take a prostitute as wife.
he did just that, cause it's like hey, God ordered you to. can't possibly say no right.
[would you have wanted that as your calling?
that one day, God came to you and say: you are to marry an unfaithful partner because that is what I have planned for you? no way any of us would have wanted to be in Hosea's shoes]
but for the first couple of years, Hosea was actually quite happy.
they had 3 children, his wife didn't leave him and he loved her.
then came one day that the wife actually said that she will leave him and the family,
go to her lovers because only they could provide her the finer things in life.
devastated as he was, God ordered Hosea to actually buy back his wife.
it's like you go up to the prostitute and redeem her kind of thing.
have you realised the answer to the question at this point in time?

how God felt, was the same as when Gomer (Hosea's wife) cheated on him and then left him.
imagine your own wife/husband sleeping around with other people
and you had to sacrifice your pride, money, everything, to get her/him back?
most of us would think:
ewk. she cheated on me! why would i want her back?
but hey. that's exactly what God did.
we turned our backs against Him, worship other things instead of Him.
it's the same as loving other people instead of your own husband.
and then He had to sacrifice his only Son, to buy us back.
yes, it's crazy, but that just goes to show how much He loves us,
(hello! wake up people! He killed his one and only Son, the only person who is pure, in exchange for us who are sinners, unfaithful, unloving, and basically don't give a crap about Him? i say:
there is no greater love than that.)

by the way, Gomer ended up loving Hosea, because he loved her.
just as how we love God, because He first loves us. (:

well, pastor pacer mentioned something about being filled with immense joy so much that we would actually burst after we know of this truth.
but all i felt was guilt.

and the guy at the next table dropped his phone onto his plate.
best part was that the phone landed right on top of the curry sauce.

after jo left for her job interview,

no idea what happened but one moment i was carrying my bag ready to stand up,

and thinking of a draft post for geog.

otcm is fun and all,
ya know, like you get to know more about drugs and medications.
i was doing the tutorial just now,
and it was all very easy to copy from the notes word by word.
but nothing goes inside the head.
you get things like paracetamol (which is the active ingredient for panadol but here we don't remember the brand names but the ingredients) and 7-chloro-1, 3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1, 4-benzadiazepin-2-one (took me 5 minutes to copy from the notes).
i wonder how am i gonna survive the testsss.

anyway, was reading this not-so-awesome book called Big Woo! and it kind of inspired me to do some serious resolutions and STICK to it this time round.
(i know it's not new year or any other special dates but i just feel like it.)
Resolution #1: move on.
seriously, i've been stuck with it for 5 years and it was left just hanging there with no attempt at The Talk. i'm just gonna get over it and ignore whatever crap he's gonna throw at me.
Resolution #2: shrink self to less lardtastic size.
HAHAH. my new year resolution was to lose 5kg and now i'm like 10kg away from my goal. ums. way to go pat... =/
Resolution #3: do some seriously cleaning to my wardrobe (the same goes for the table too).
Resolution #4: be more thrifty!!! put 50cents in bearbank everyday.
which i'm totally not following this rule since i predicted that i will be spending at least $100 later.
Resolution #5: ACHIEVE ALL RESOLUTIONS BY END OF HOLIDAY.

met up with jialin again.
supposedly to study.
so i brought my pom notes and photocopied past year papers and met her at khatib to go to some ulu ulu cafe.
and i sat down... open up deception point and started reading. lol.
for the whole time (5 to 8+pm),
i've been reading the book and havent once touch my pom notes (except to take it out and place it on my lap).
jialin just flip a few pages of her maths textbook and most of the time we were just catching up with one another about school.
it seems SUPER long ago when i was still wearing pinafore,
surrounded by jialin and krys,
sitting at the canteen talking from 2+ till 4 about nothing in particular...

well, after that we went compass point's long john to have dinner.
and saw sheryl!
ya know, the infocomm vice president.
she still look pretty much the same since i last saw her,
which happens to be 2 years ago.
and she couldn't remember me, though she did say i look familiar.
it wasn't until i said i was from tp and jialin helped with the "ys's ex" part then she remember me.
so, with her appearance,
jialin was reminded of how infocomm was like when she was still around,
taking care of the juniors and how slack that president was and sheryl had to do everything herself. hahah.
(totally expected. typical behavior of his.)

back to walking down of memory lane,
jialin was recalling the scene when their batch o level results were released.

2 full hours before dg actually starts.
so i decided to went home early. ^^
but when i boarded the bus,
jc sms me and ask me to meet her at design school canteen so we could start the dg early.

friday 7 august:
i skipped school! LOL.
went back to ANDERSON to celebrate ndp with them. ((:
i was the only ex-andersonian there for assembly lah.
qy was supposed to be there but she pangseh me!
(okay, she explained to me today that she woke up late and forgot to bring her phone while rushing.)
not the same parade as last year (okay there was no parade at all),
but there's colours party.
i videoed it. see for yourself whether it was good or not. lol.
after the assembly was the colours award thingy, i think.
so the ugs, sports, performing arts went up on stage to collect the tube look-alike thingy.
then got carnival!! (no concert this year. cause they say h1n1 no time to rehearse. the same goes for the parade too.)
the booths are like all over the place,
not as organised as previous years.
classrooms, canteens, inspire town, outside staff room all have.
the ideas this year are like damn cool please!
got dunking machine, the float thingy where you have to fight your opponent and knock them off their feet, some water babies hunt by 2/5, karaoke session and lots more!
(okay, the ideas arent new but these were a never-seen-before in anderson. hahaha.)
bought soba to eat. (yes, they sell soba!!)
there was this booth selling bbq food,
and they were really bbq-ing on the spot! (got pictures to prove)
stayed at the karaoke "booth" (it's just at the amphitheatre) the most.
cause mrs cheong was singing!!
she's good lor. better than mrs trixie ong. (LOL)
there was another chinese teacher who sang like a pro.
forgot her name le. hahaha.
olivia went to sing too!! our campus superstar! :D

huixuan saluted to a book today.
cause i told her to. (:

doing proposals make me think of old times in secondary school.
i was in council yet there wasn't much opportunity for me to actually write a proposal
cause most of the time it was the ex-co or weijun doing for sprint events.
and the only time i did one was for investiture. for the decoration of the hall.
it wasn't even counted as a proposal cause all i did was just draw out the hall,
and add the deco and label them on ONE piece of paper. ^^
so while i was lamenting away then,
now comes my reward.
tons of proposals with deadlines side by side,
leaving no space in between for a gulp of fresh air.
so why am i still contented with my life? (:

went sentosa for rht survey.
laughed from school all the way to sentosa itself.
yes, including while waiting at the bus stop and on the train.
thanks to joanna and huixuan.
and on the train to harbourfront,
our topic from funny changed to scary.
out came the ghost stories and horror movies,
schools' mystery cases and night walks.

it was hard to get people to do survey naturally.
they see you they'll just run away.
and some people just can't read the instructions and do the survey properly.
when it said rank, they put ticks.
and the group of thai tourists,
when i let them do the survey,
they left the gender part blank.
hur. guess there's too many transexuals that they don't even know what's their gender anymore.

was finding books on french cuisine for fnb project.
and also to compile the selected dishes with wines into a menu.
the desserts just look simply mouth-watering.

thursday 9 july
met up early to do spss for rht survey.
those incompleted or did not follow instructions one,
we just anyhow fill in for them. lol.
oh. one of them wrote that sentosa's attractions are all rubbish.

friday 10 july
went for cya interview.
turns out only me and joanna wear smart-casual.
the rest just wear normally.
there was like 6 to 7 interviewees and 2 interviewers, one of which is just the secretary.
hope i can get through though.
second interview by the caas people. tough.

after school went t1's bbq chicken for dinner with jha.
the food's quite nice. very full afterwards.
then me and anna took 969 to admiralty
and chiong to lighthouse.
we were just in time,
but there was like no more seats in the sanctuary left.
and there's still quite a lot of people waiting to be seated.
so we were ushered to basement 1's multipurpose studio.
the ambience's not as WOW as on top. :(
but the songs are SUPER NICE.
i miss pastor pacer's voice. hahah.
no money to buy the cds though.
only had 10 bucks with me and they cost 15 for preorder.
so i bought the cup instead. ^^

okay. so i'm supposed to write out my cue card for the prep-presentation for iht tomorrow.
i remembered quite clearly that i have them,
but somehow i just can't find them right now.
so, i'm slacking.
and it's 12.35am.
and we are meeting at 9am tomorrow.
which means i have to get up at 7.

heh. yesterday's rinku ecp outing was fun.
i thought i was late. turned out everyone else was later. lol.
when i reached only glenn, ellee and wanting was there.
and HE who was feeling childish, went to buy happy meal.
after finishing the food then he realised there wasn't any toy inside.
paiseh to go ask for the toy, i was sent instead.
turns out the toy was quite cool actually. lol!

went to pit 27 even though we didn't book it.
then everybody went into cliques and started playing different games.
some captains ball, some went cycling and skating.
i didn't have change so i paid for the bike rentals first.

basically, today mainly just do cheers only.
first we meet our course manager, ms choi.
went through briefly about the course,

got other few more races which didn't include schools so we never win lo.
but for every other race, business won.
so it's like 4 races out of 6. :D
plus! business school is overall champion!

but rinku went opposite to buy food then sit outside library and have dinner together.

anyway, jam&hop was just crazy lah.
the songs weren't as nice as those played during regatta,
but still we danced till we stink to high heaven. hahah.
